Lidocaine, as a local anesthetic, reduces the sensitivity of the sensory nerve endings in the area of application.
Chlorhexidine has bacteriostatic and bactericidal properties, especially against Gram-positive and, to a lesser extent, gram-negative bacteria. It also has an antifungal effect against Candida albicans yeast. It acts by inhibiting the activity of membrane enzymes of these microorganisms and by impairing membrane permeability for potassium ions, amino acids and nucleotides.
